A Message from Alex R. Fischer

Dear Friends,

During the last decade, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has followed the vision of Journey to Best Outcomes to guide advances in research, treatment and the highest quality care. This year proved to be just as innovative and rewarding as when we started this journey. We also know it takes many dedicated people and partners to achieve the best outcomes for children everywhere and differentiate ourselves from other children’s hospitals.

We continue to expand our reach through the generosity of many community partners and national corporate partners. Nationwide, Big Lots, Justice, Lane Bryant and the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Foundation, are just a few of the organizations contributing to the success of our institution.

The Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion is on schedule to open in early 2020. The comprehensive care approach it represents will bring the best in research, education and community partnerships together. By working with our community providers on an issue affecting one in five children, we strive to lead the way as a national role model to improve access to mental health care.

Nationwide Children’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families initiative has grown by focusing
on improving the lives of those in the surrounding communities. It helped reduce vacancy rates
by improving and building more than 300 homes; tutored elementary children to ensure they pass language testing and advance to the next grade level; mentored teens to improve graduation rates; and provided access to healthcare in schools to reduce absentee rates.

This year, Dr. Steve Allen, Nationwide Children’s CEO, announced his retirement for June 2019.
I want to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Allen for his work during the last 12 years and the
vision he has had for the hospital’s journey. His leadership and commitment, not only to children
but also to the entire staff and community, have led Nationwide Children’s to become one of the top pediatric research hospitals in the country. Our strategic plan for growth would not have been possible without his dedication and passion.

We’re proud of the work during the last year and where we’re headed. Along with consistent vision and many partnerships, we know this success would not be possible without the best people and programs. The passion of our people and the strength of our direction will ensure we meet our goal to improve the lives of children everywhere.
